FADE IN.:

INT. ROOMS 4 U - LIGHTING DEPARTMENT- DAY

The Lighting department of the store is empty except for THALIA. She browses through the lamps, switching them on and off before walking away. She mumbles to herself the names of the products but she pronounces them wrong.

THALIA
(to herself)
I wonder if the shelter needs wall lamps or desk lamps.

A strange smell causes her to pause. She wrinkles her nose. It smells like smoke but the fire alarm hasn't gone off. She turns.

A BOY (DEMON) stands behind her. He looks no older than 7 years old. Looking around, Thalia doesn't see any frantic parent.

THALIA
Hey, there. Are you lost?

The BOY/DEMON looks around with a frown. Red eyes turn to Thalia.

BOY/DEMON
(annoyed)
You summoned me?

THALIA takes a step back. A child isn't supposed to have such a deep voice.

THALIA
(stammering)
So, I can take you to the registers. They have these, um, mics that they can broadcast to the entire store. we can find your parents then.

Thalia smiles.

BOY/DEMON
You're stupid and dumb.

THALIA keeps the smile on her face.

THALIA
I'm trying to help you.

BOY/DEMON
On the contrary. You're the one who needs help. You summoned me for a reason.

THALIA
(confused)
Summoned?

BOY/DEMON
(annoyed)
Yes, summoned.

His foot begins to tap. THALIA nods to herself.

THALIA
I summoned you here because I need help?

BOY/DEMON
Yes.

THALIA
Okay. What do I call you then? I'm Thalia, by the way.

The BOY/DEMON smirks.

BOY/DEMON
You're also a fool.

THALIA looks around the Lighting Department again. Still no sign of anybody. Were they all hiding from her?

THALIA
Let's find your parents. I bet they are really worried about you.

BOY/DEMON
I'm a thousand year old demon. I have no parents.

THALIA
(cautious)
Alright. Let's make a deal then.

The BOY/DEMON's eyes lit up.

BOY/DEMON
Finally.

THALIA
Help me, help you find your parents.

The BOY/DEMON mutters something in a strange language that Thalia doesn't recognize.

BOY/DEMON
(angrily)
I am a demon. You summoned me. Tell me what you want.

THALIA
(tiredly)
Listen, kid. I just want to bring you to your parents, okay? I'm 100% sure they're freaking out. Why don't we -

A boy cries.

THALIA grabs the BOY/DEMON'S hand before going to search for the the crying child. The BOY/DEMON reluctantly follows.

INT. ROOMS 4 U - OFFICE DEPARTMENT - CONTINUOUS ACTION

THALIA and the BOY/DEMON search past the desks before finding a young boy of 6 years, on the ground, red-face and crying. THALIA and the BOY/DEMON approach.

THALIA
Hi, there. Did you loose your parents?

The boy (EVAN) stops crying. Seeing an unfamiliar face, EVAN continues crying.

BOY/DEMON
Child, enough!

EVAN suddenly stops, scared. THALIA gives BOY/DEMON a look.

THALIA
Hey, it's okay. My name is Thalia. I'm trying to find this little boy's parents too.

EVAN
(hiccups)
I want my mommy.

THALIA
I'm sure you do, bud. Can you tell me your name?

EVAN
(stammering)
Evan.

THALIA
Nice to meet you Evan.

THALIA suddenly snaps her fingers, realizing something.

THALIA
(to Evan)
Do you have your mom's cell phone number? I can call her.
(to Boy/Demon)
I can call your parents too. Do you know their number?

Both boys shake their heads. THALIA nods sadly then holds her hand out to EVAN.

THALIA
Let's go to the registers then. They can use their microphones to talk through the entire store, okay.

EVAN looks at THALIA's hands before taking it.

THALIA
(to Boy/Demon)
Let's find Evan's parents first.

BOY/DEMON
Is that the deal you want to make?

THALIA
Er, yes. Let's go with that.

BOY/DEMON
Good. It's settled. As soon as we find the boy's parents, are deal is finished.

MONTAGE:

- THALIA, BOY/DEMON, and EVAN walk among the departments asking other shoppers about EVAN's parents. No one has seen them.

- As they walk, BOY/DEMON doesn't have a reflection on the reflecting surface. The other shoppers don't notice him.

- THALIA and the boys find an EMPLOYEE 1 and ask for help.

- EMPLOYEE 1 gets on their radio and talks to someone.

- EMPLOYEE 1 directs Thalia and the boys downstairs.

BACK TO SCENE

INT. ROOMS 4 U - CHECK-OUT - DAY

THALIA leads the boys towards one of the registers. She waits in line for a customer to finish with his purchase.

THALIA
Excuse me. My name is Thalia. I was directed here. Um, I'm trying to find the parents -

EMPLOYEE 2
Oh, yes.

EMPLOYEE 2 turns to Evan.

EMPLOYEE 2
Can you tell me your full name? How old are you?

EVAN
Evan. My second name starts with a B.

He holds up six fingers. EMPLOYEE 2 grabs a phone besides her register and speaks into it.

EMPLOYEE 2
(Over the speaker system)
Will the mother of Evan B. please come to register 9? We have your child. This is for the mother of Evan B. He's wearing a yellow jacket, blue jeans. Green shirt.

THALIA
(To Boy/Demon)
Don't you want to find your parents too?

BOY/DEMON
You try my patience. I'll be gone as soon as the boy's guardian comes for him.

THALIA
(To Employee 2)
There's this other boy-

EMPLOYEE 2
If you find anyone else, bring them up and we'll try to contact their parents. If worse comes to worse, we can call the cops. Now, if you'll excuse me.

Confused, THALIA and the boys step aside to let other shoppers finish their purchase. Had they not notice the BOY/DEMON?

THALIA
(To Boy/Demon)
I still don't know your name.

BOY/DEMON
Don't waste my time.

INT. ROOM 4 U - CAFETERIA - EVENING

THALIA and the boys eat an early dinner. She texts back and forth with her roommate. THALIA will be late getting back to the dorms..

From the stairs, two women approach the tables. One is EMPLOYEE 2. The other is the MOTHER. THALIA stands as they approach.

THALIA
Hello. So, Evan -

MOTHER
(To Evan)
What's wrong with you? You made me come all this way for you. Didn't I tell you not to go anywhere!?

EVAN immediately starts crying. MOTHER doesn't seem to care. She grabs his arm and yanks him out of the chair.

THALIA
(To Mother)
You can't -

MOTHER
He's my child. You've done your civic duty, now piss off.

THALIA stares flabbergasted at MOTHER. She looks from EMPLOYEE 2 to MOTHER and back again. EVAN continues to cry, sauce is smeared all over his mouth.

BOY/DEMON
(Aloud)
Insufferable mortal.
(To Thalia)
The guardian is here. This concludes our deal. I have business with this woman.

MOTHER pulls EVAN with her. EMPLOYEE 2 departs. THALIA takes a step forward, frustrated.

BOY/DEMON
You've done your part. I'll take it from here.

THALIA
(Weakly)
What about your parents? We still have to find them.

BOY/DEMON
I have none.

BOY/DEMON hops off the chair.

BOY/DEMON
I do thank you for the meal. I'll depart for now.

When THALIA turns to the Boy/Demon he is gone.

INT. CAMPUS LIBRARY - DAY (TWO WEEKS LATER)

THALIA browses on her laptop, researching LE ROMAN DE SILENCE. Opening a new tab, she notices a strange news clipping. Curious, she clicks on it. On the new site, she reads through the column.
MOTHER's picture appears next to the column. THALIA's brow furrows as she reads the information. (The articles states that there was a fire in the apartments complex. There was only one dead and that was MOTHER. Her child and everyone else got out safely.)

Feeling faint, THALIA sits back in her chair. BOY/DEMON is on the chair beside her.

BOY/DEMON
I've outdone myself this time.

THALIA
(surprised)
Y-you! How? What are you-?

BOY/DEMON
Don't make a scene. We're in a library.

THALIA looks around and find that there's a few other students at the tables, studying. No one seemed to notice the strange boy besides THALIA.

BOY/DEMON
I must confess that our deal didn't sit right. Because of this, I've found that I can't go back until, you tell me what you want.

THALIA
You're still going on about that? Who are you? No -

BOY/DEMON
These questions are better left unanswered. Now, tell me, Thalia. What do you want.
A blank expression appears on THALIA's face. She shakes it off.

THALIA
Well, right now I just want to finish my paper.

BOY/DEMON crosses his arms.

BOY/DEMON
Then I guess I'm going to be here for a long time.
